Buchanan Saves Chinese Sailor

Treatment given by the medical department of the USS Buchanan (DDG14) saved the life of a crewman from the Nationalist Chinese merchantman Union Carrier June 21.
The crewman Yunglai Chu was critically ill with a kidney infection while the Union carrier was on route form Singapore to Kobe, Japan.
Buchanan was conducting operations at sea when the call for medical assistance was received from the Union Carrier.
Treatment was administered by Lt. John W. Garden (MC), Des Div 152 medical officer.
Yunglai Chu was later taken to a Kaohsiung, Taiwan hospital. His condition was reported as improving.
The San Diego-based Buchanan is commanded by Cmdr. David A. Webster.
